Report on SMK Sg. Maong ITF Taekwondo Club Recruitment Drive
Date : 23rd January 2010
The ITF Sarawak had organized a recruitment drive project for the year 2010 in all the affiliation schools. Fortunately, this time, the project had been carried out in SMK Sg. Maong’s extra curriculum open day. The purpose was to rebuild the club and to reactivate the club in the school so that the school will have its own ITF taekwondo club. Besides, it will be easier for the students to join if ITF club was set up in schools. This project was headed by me together with other assistant instructors from various schools. I had been appointed by STA as instructor-in-charge for SMK Sg. Maong.
On that morning, we arrived at the school as early as 7am in the morning. There also a lot of other clubs in the school setting up and displaying their clubs’ achievement and records. ITF Sarawak had been given one booth to display all our medals, trophies and certificates. The purpose of setting up the booth was to let the students know the benefits they can gain from ITF taekwondo. Furthermore, from the exhibition displayed, the students will also get to know the recognition given by the state and federal government on all their achievements and certificates.
The event started off with the visit of students from all classes ranging from form 5, 4 and 3 on the morning session. The form 1 and 2 came in the second session in the afternoon. During the visits by the students, they had been briefed by our recruitment team members about the information on ITF taekwondo. During the briefing, we also demonstrated some of the ITF techniques with the purpose of letting the students to know the theory of power practiced ITF in which it makes the difference between ITF taekwondo arts and other martial arts. Besides, we also, explained the history of taekwondo and philosophies in ITF taekwondo that had been stressed by the founder, the late General Choi Hong Hi.
The event on that day ended with about 60 students who signed up as ITF taekwondo club members. The team was very happy to receive such amount of members although everyone of us felt tired as we had to stay for the whole day. It was indeed a good event organized by the SMK Sg. Maong. The students had learnt to know the difference between ITF taekwondo and other martial arts club in the school. We hope that in future, more of such event to be organized to expose to the students to promote the importance of extra-curricular activities in the school and towards the credits in enable them to get an entry into higher learning institution in future.
