2011 Gawai Festival ITF TaeKwon-Do demonstration

A night of eye-opening entertainment, fine food and excellent company, all in the name of God! Such was the grand opening of St. Luke’s Church of Kampung Sangai Empani, Serian, on the starry evening of Saturday, the 28th of May 2011. Now the biggest and most beautiful church in Serian capable of seating a congregation of up to 400!

Presided over by ITF’s own Dato Dr Grandmaster Leong Wai Meng himself – ITF vice president, 9th degree black belt, intrepid traveler and philanthropist extraordinaire, you can be sure the audience wasn’t the only ones holding their breath!

Enter the STA demonstration team stealing centre stage as the highlight of the night’s performances! Our State Coaches Mr Jimmy Lo and Miss Amy Bong put their heads together to specially create a series of technical stunts including self-defence routines against weapons and multiple opponents to wow the masses! After the show was given a polish and the go ahead by Master Johnny Chai, it was executed amongst the audience’s gasps and enthusiastic applause. With all eyes on Grandmaster Leong, a sigh relief was audible from the demonstration team when the good Dato gave it his nod of approval! Phew!

The rest of the night was an enormous success showcasing the talents of our own Mr Sudeh; better known as ‘Brian’s Rockstar Dad’ after his amazing rendition of the Beatles’ ‘I saw her standing there’ forcing him into an encore of Elvis’ ‘Hound Dog’ by the crowd, as well as a couple’s joget by Grandmaster Leong and the ever radiant Datin Judy Leong, A definitive meaning of the word ‘sporting’ and not just because of our Dato’s athletic history!

Speaking of couples, it was difficult to ignore the attraction in the air that night! As illustrated below – Well done Mr Delton Sako and Mr Lawrence Chai! This just goes to prove our STA boys have much more talent than they show us on stage. Ah, young love…

Despite all the fun and laughs, one could not forget the most humbling feature of the night when Grandmaster Leong went up to the stage to give his speech. Nevermind that he had just donated thousands towards the renovation of the church, he modestly brushed it off as simply doing what he had to do to carry out the Lord’s work. This was followed by his presentation of monetary gifts to the Kampung’s elderly with a deep bow of respect to each recipient, reminding all and sundry that regardless of your wealth or social position in life, one needs to be ever mindful of their duty to the community at large.

A night to remember for all those involved! With that said, have a browse through the rest of our pictures below commemorating the evening and perhaps get a feel for yourself ;) Thanks for stopping by! :D
