ITF Sarawak Goodwill also in ITF Singapore

Bits and Blobs of ITF Singapore

ITF Umpire and Tournament Rules

The recently concluded ITF Umpire and Tournament Rules seminar on July 24, 2011 saw 16 participants and it successfully bred the first seed of umpires among ITF Singapore black belts.

The seminar took place at Jurong West Sports Complex, which commenced on 0900 and halted at 1500.

Organised by 6th Dan black belt cum ITFS instructor, Sir Micheal Pang had given me the opportunity to sharpen my public speaking skills through conducting the six-hour sharing session.

Treasurer of ITFS, Lim Lixin led the tenets of Taekwon-do and recited the student’s oath to officially kick-start the seminar. The group photo was taken earlier to deem the importance of such an event.

Right after the formalities, I continued with cramming those black belts with Umpire bibles that seemed to puzzle most of the first timers.

As time ticked by, participants slowly fathom out their duties and regulations as fair and conscience umpires.

A 20-minute break was given to refresh themselves from heavy theory loads. In order to boost their learning pace, I decided to apply all the theories into play so that they were able to grasp a scenario-like experience in learning those theories.

Half past 1300, I went through all the 14 judging signals with them showing those warning signs. They seemed to absorb better when practicing it compared to digesting words.

After judging signals, I explained to them the sparring score points and legal attacks that could be used in a sparring match.

The next agenda that followed was the setting of a championship ring that prototyped the real competition. I let the fresh umpires to sit in as referees and asked them to judge patterns.

Done judging, I coupled up with brief explanations on the average gauge of points that should be given.

The similar setting went with judging a sparring match. Bit by bit, their confidence level in judging and becoming a centre referee improved.

Accurately at 1500, after a few trials performed by them, the seminar was adjourned.
